Ricky's Ramblings
Little Darlin’
I would like to tell you to start off that my wife Little Darlin’ is the love of my life, but some times she can be ornery as a polecat. Well last year I thought we had plenty of hay to carry us through the winter and I didn’t plant my sorghum sudan. We had a very dry fall and winter and have run out of hay. We are having to buy hay so Little Darlin’s critters will have plenty to eat. She ain’t very happy with me and tells me about it on a regular basis.
So this year I got every thing ready early to plant. I thought that might calm her down a bit. Yesterday morning I went out to start my old 4020 propane tractor (It can be as ornery as Little Darlin’) and since it wasn’t 50 degrees out side that old tractor wouldn’t start. That got me to thinking that it was probably too cold to be planting sorghum sudan anyway. So I went back to the house to have a cup of coffee and explain to Little Darlin’ that it was to cold too plant. She wasn’t too happy but I explained that it was better to wait and make sure that we got a good stand and the young plants were healthy so we could have a good crop over several cuttings. I made sure to let her know that way we would have more hay and better quality, because we only want the best for her critters.
Well the moral to this story is that we all want to get our sorghum sudan planted as early as possible. (Especially Little Darlin’) But if we wait until we have a 60-degree soil temperature we will have faster emergence, a better stand and healthier plants than if we push and plant when it is still to cool.
I think I have spun this yarn about as far as I need to for now. Lynn is going to let me write to you again next month and I will tell you about my neighbor Joe Ed’s dawg.
